Kids Contest and Sallys-Sewing-Circle
by Kelli Erickson on 08/06/10
I hope all of my loyal readers are looking forward to a fun and HOT (especially here in sunny Mesa) weekend. For me, it will be a great excuse to stay indoors and do some much needed sewing. I just have to say that I LOVE MAGAZINES! But, seriously, mostly just sewing magazines. I love to watch the trends, and love to follow and experiment with all of those NIFTY projects which are often included.
GUESS WHAT?? SALLY'S NOW CARRYS MAGAZINES...YAY!!
Anyway, I wanted to give my readers something to look forward to. By Monday, or maybe Tuesday, I'm hoping to have my first project, geared more for adults, completed with plenty of "how to's" AND the first project for my loyal kid followers! I told my kids today in our last summer KIDS DAY CAMP session:( , that by following the Sally's Rally blog there would be projects for ALL ages, including them.
SIDENOTE FOR SALLY'S KIDS: I really want to form a "Kids Club." At Sally's we already have Pfaff club, so I'm going to hold a contest for any of you kids out there. Let's come up with a better name than just "Kids Club." I WANT SOME SUGGESTIONS! For you kids, yes, I'm getting OLD, and my brain is slow on suggestions but, really, this is your club. So, this is the deal, with your parents permission, leave a comment on the blog for "kids club" names; and, whoever gets selected - wins a $10.00 Sally's Gift Card, and maybe a few make and takes (extra sewing projects from my old stash at home...he he.) Anyway, kids, it's up to you. Make sure you don't forget your name on your comment; and, we will officially choose our name on September 11, our first "Kids Club" meeting at Sally's Fabrics. Project details and pricing will be forthcoming.
One last note, I researched in Google Groups (who knew there was such a thing??) and guess what? I could not find a single sewing group in the valley so I started Sally's-Sewing-Circle. It is sooo cool! I know that anyone can join; and, we just discuss our ideas and success stories, and yes, some of our mistakes about sewing. It's fun - SO JOIN!! Here is the link: http://groups.google.com/group/sallys-sewing-circle/topics YIKES! That's long.
Well until next time, Keep Sewing!! :)
Fabric QUALITY:)
by Kelli Erickson on 08/05/10
I have to admit (and am embarassed to do so!) that when I joined Sally's Fabrics five whole years ago I knew nothing about the quality of fabric i.e. tread count, feel of the fabric etc.... So, here I have sewed regularly for 20+ years and have been buying cute fabric, yes, a bargain, yes, but low quality, yes.
So you may ask, DOES FABRIC QUALITY COUNT? And the answer is YES!
Actually, I am a HUGE fan of home decorating and have been sewing home decor for years. In fact, the first thing I do when I move to a new home is I rip down the current drapes and make new BEAUTIFUL ones. And yes, I do shop for quality and go through the painfull process of lining them. But, hence that is a subject for another day, and another class.
(LOOK FOR UPCOMING HOME DEC. CLASSES.) very simple ones...
Anyway, to continue... I interviewed a lady who is a master quilter (who is not associated with Sally's Fabrics.) I was very interested in getting a second opinion on fabric quality. And this was her opinion:
"Quilting is such a fun hobby; and, it is time consuming. But, when a project is finished WOW you have such a beautiful project. The interesting thing though is I am adamant that when doing such an important project, sewers must use high quality fabric - that is, you need to look for fabric which has a high thread count, fabric that won't bleed, and fabric that won't fall apart while you are working with it." **April Price
In fact, with any project you are working on, if you are going to go through the process of actually taking the time to sew it, (I mean SERIOUSLY we can all find cheaper pre-made projects at the store) why would anyone spend money on low budget, low quality fabric???
NOTE TO SELF: Buy your fabric to last a lifetime!
So...I guess the message I'm trying so hard to get accross is, you pay for what you get i.e. QUALITY FABRIC when you shop at Sally's Fabrics.
At Sally's your fabric will last a lifetime!
Kids Programs
by Kelli Erickson on 08/04/10
Hello my faithful Sally's Fabrics followers!
- First, I wanted to explain some of the fun things we have been doing this summer at Sally's Fabrics. In the past we at Sally's have had a week long kids summer camp - and it has always been soooo much fun. I was thinking though that this summer I would change things up! I wanted all kids to have an opportunity to take advantage of our "kids summer day camps." That way if a child couldn't make one week of camp because of vacation, they could perhaps make another sewing date. It was a success :) They were held every Tuesday and Friday with the exception of one week in July. I was out of town :(. Anyway, during the school year we have decided to continue a variation of this summer program - with a few TWEAKS... I would be so interested in a little feedback here. I would like to post a project once a month, which will be posted the first week of the month, starting in September. I may even be persuaded to post a little sneak peak the last week of August. I was thinking that we could form our own "Kids Fun Club," and meet monthly on the first Saturday of the month. Now, I realize that the first Saturday of September is Labor Day weekend, so lets plan on the second Saturday of September, September 11. Let's keep the class to $15.00 and I will FOR SURE keep supply costs to a minimum. For September, Iwill plan a FUN project that can be finished in about three hours!
- Take a peek at some of our fun projects from the summer. We did Summer Swim Wraps, T-shirts w/embellishments, Zipper headbands, Totes, Wallets, Pillowcases, PJ pants, Backpacks, Pencil Pouches, Ice cream parfait pin cushions,Cell phone bags, and just this Friday... a peace sign t-shirt (there is still time to sign up.) We have had so much fun!
Take a look at these happy kids!
Here are some of our other finished kids projects.

A note on "Kids Can Sew" at Sally's Fabrics This is a year round class where students ages 8-15 can learn how to sew. These classes are patterned after the old "Home Economics" classes that were so readily offered when we went to school. For the bargain price of $45.00 a month each student will be able to come to class weekly for one hour and be placed in a class with students their age. Class size is limited to no more than five students, so that each student receives one on one attention.
These classes will be held weekly Tuesday and Thursday afternoons. As demand builds more classes will open up. Call the store with any questions. (480) 833-7201
